Calculating the equivalence of a series connection

This calculator allows you to calculate the equivalent of series connected resistors, capacitors and inductors. To calculate, select the required element and enter the values.

When connecting resistors and inductors in series, their ratings add up. If you connect series capacitors, their equivalent capacitance, on the contrary, will decrease.

Application

The use of several series-connected capacitors allows you to increase the total allowable voltage that can be applied to them. For example, if you need to connect a capacitor to a 230 V circuit and no suitable capacitor is available, you can use two 200 V capacitors connected in series, in which case their total allowable voltage will be 400 V.
